Abstract

Exhibited at the Banquet exhibition, Tin Sheds Gallery, University of Sydney, 1 September - 8 October 2022.

Sleeper is an architectural installation included in the BANQUET exhibition at Tin Sheds Gallery 2022. Sleeper reconceptualises and condenses three scales of extraction and destruction embodied within the film Dune (David Lynch/Frank) through an aperitif machine. The ‘aperitif bar’ recreates a scaled citadel with vertical towers forming the key function of an aperitif juicer. These juicers are fed by aperitif liquid suspended above the bar itself. Steel pylons pierce the space below the towers, suggesting a raping of the land – the consequences of mining and development. The final act is provided by a leaching of the aperitif liquid to the ground below, tracing the devastation residually on a white velum. The violent interaction between viewerand machine is played out between welding curtains, referencing the vibrant green walled cubicle or ‘theatre room’ of Geidi Prime, where Raban and Baron Harkonnen carry out their heinous acts.
