Abstract
This chapter looks at some of the implications of new forms of technological space by examining examples of what I shall call 'smart spaces' drawn mainly from the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s at Paramount Studios, Los Angeles. The technological spaces considered here are the Starship Enterprise as a whole, its command bridge, and the holedeck. These fictional smart spaces could be said to represent different models and uses of computers and computerized spaces.
