Abstract
Despite greater awareness and repeated documentation over several decades, the ‘problem’ of under-representation of women as surgeons continues. In this issue, Hill and colleagues examine the lived experiences of women aspiring to, on the road to acquiring, and at beginning and end of, careers in surgery. This work caps a programme of doctoral research by the lead author, commenced when she herself was a medical student aspiring to become a surgeon. Apparently based on participants from or associated with one UK medical school, her work has been published in this and other high impact journals, attracted commentaries and she in turn has written commentaries on this vexed problem. So what is the problem?
