Abstract
![CDATA[The main aim of this research is to test and extend the unfolding model of voluntary turnover developed by Lee, Holtom, McDaniel, and Hill (1999) in China. China is an ideal site for testing the generalizability of Western organizational theories due to its unique social environment. The current research used survey data collected from four different cities. The findings suggest that the original model is not applicable in the Chinese context. The results demonstrate that China’s social institutions and national culture have an impact upon the voluntary turnover behaviors of Chinese workers. The extended unfolding model of voluntary behavior incorporates the characteristics of the original model as well as taking into consideration of socially and culturally related factors, such as social welfare, hukou (household registration), guanxi (personal connections), and dang’an (dossier). Theoretical and practical implications will also be discussed.]]
