    Abstract

It is observed that one strategy adopted by SME's seeking to improve their market position in a globalized business environment is to participate in collaborations that may help build effective scale and scope and/or improve business practices. Supporting initiatives from Industry Associations and Government may facilitate this strategy. Examination of five case examples suggest that antecedent events and pre-existing social capital can enhance the pre-disposition of firms or key individuals towards collaboration. The contribution of external facilitation is also considered, as are the linkages between external facilitators and social capital formation. Three different mechanisms for enhancing market access are noted: operating as an extended enterprise, joint marketing under an umbrella brand, and promoting excellence through best practice and mentoring strategies.
