Abstract

I met Maria Terraneo through Antonietta Loffredo whose interesting, explorative and evocative music projects for piano and toy piano were always championed by Maria and the Carducci Institute. Antonietta and I had met at an international music education conference held in Bologna, waiting to attend a delegate's presentation. "You're a pianist from Como!" "You're a composer from Sydney!" "Ah!" This partnership has co-curated several projects of new music drawing in composers from Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Through concerts and commercial CD releases this music finds a place in the world. Maria has supported all of these projects and her particular interest in Antarctica was the impetus for our project of the same name, of new music for piano and toy piano. My husband and I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Maria when last in Como staying with Antonietta, a lovely evening of dining and talking about mutual interests. When I found out Maria liked the music of Prokofiev and Mozart, among others, which I like too, writing a neoclassical piece in her memory seemed just right - reflecting her musical tastes and my own interest in neo-classicism. Sonata Neoclassica is a one movement work, like a Scarlatti sonata. Texture windows exploring several stylistic characteristics are framed by chords which lead and follow the harmonic direction.
