Songs of Grief & Sorrow: for Soprano and Piano

Research output: Creative WorksComposition

Abstract

When Milissa's little girl died unexpectedly, her mind fractured. In order to show the vertigo, disassociation and hyperarousal of what is known as complicated grief, the non-confluence between image, sound and word was uppermost in conceptualising the film, All the Little Boxes, directed by Iqbal Barkat and Milissa Deitz and written by Milissa Deitz, with cinematographer, Vincent Tay. Songs of Grief and Sorrow draws on texts from the film script shaped into three aspects of grief, sorrow and memory. The songs were first performed by Australian soprano, Ayşe Göknur Shanal with pianist Eugenie Tamplon. Composed 2021.

Research background (field, context, research question)
Songs which use the personal experience of someone’s grief are becoming more frequently found in the classical music repertoire. They are certainly more common in popular songs. When writer Milissa Deitz’s daughter died unexpectedly, she wrote a film script – All the Little Boxes – and took part in the film. Songs of Grief and Sorrow draws on texts from the film script to shape three songs – Grief, Sorrow and Memory. This setting of found text to music has been used with war letters, letters of grief and at times, emails.
Research contribution (innovation, new knowledge)
The three songs take the three concepts of grief, sorrow and memory, and the associated texts taken from the film script, and musically work with the move through these three emotional processes. The soprano voice and piano work together but also apart as the words tell of Milissa’s journey through the grieving process.

Research significance (evidence of excellence)
The songs were performed at Western Sydney University in 2021 by soprano Ayşe Göknur Shanal with Eugenie Tamplon at the piano. The score is published by Wirripang Pty. Ltd. and the songs have been recorded for future CD release.
