Abstract
In many ways the philosophical concerns of the present day recapitulate and renew the fundamental disputes over political and religious legitimacy that arose in the early modern European context of the seventeenth century. The religious conflicts that swept Europe then in the wake of the Protestant Reformation and which the Enlightenment notion of reason was meant to arbitrate are echoed today by conflicts over the enduring meaning of the Enlightenment itself and its global-historical effects through and after colonialism.
