Spinoza's authority in the treatises : an introduction

Abstract

Any discussion of authority in Spinoza's political treatises"”both the Theological-Political Treatise and the Political Treatise"”needs to start by explaining what "authority" means in this context. There are at least three wordsin Latin which cover the semantic range of the term authority in English. Theyare "auctoritas," "imperium" and "summa potestas."
