Abstract
If all goes well, the birth of a building should be an auspicious event. But an ill-starred story has long circulated about the launch of one of Melbourne's best-known and most contentious structures. At Crown Casino's 1997 opening ceremony, organisers celebrated the venture by releasing into the night sky a flock of white doves - universal symbols of hope, peace and purity. But, so the tale goes, the poor birds met an unscheduled horrific end, incinerated in mid flight by the flame-belching braziers that line the casino's frontage.
