Abstract
Focusing on examples of live performance in drama, dance, opera and light entertainment, this book explores the mystique of stage presence, a topic as compelling as the performers who demonstrate it. The quality of ‘presence’ in a performer has strong resonances of the uncanny. It is associated with primal, animal qualities in human individuals, but also has connotations of divinity and the supernatural; it is defined in relation to figures of evil as well as heroism. It traces these associations through modern theatrical history. This challenging study also highlights the blend of science and spirituality that accompanies the appreciation of human power. The scientific imagery of electricity and magnetism is central to the way presence is described, but ghosts and deities are never far from the scene.
