    Abstract

Many organisations now face the challenge to move from the post-industrial economy into the knowledge economy. Knowledge management has been receiving increasing attention over the last decade (Edvinsson and Malone, 1997). Accordingly, organisations need to develop new management practices in terms of the knowledge (both current and future) that will be needed for them to continue to be successful. So how does a knowledge organisation assess whether or not its current practices are appropriate? With respect to human capital, it is considered that organisations should begin by developing a strategic management approach for those employees that will have the biggest impact on organisation performance, i.e. its experts and their expertise.
