    Abstract

This paper discusses the research with children of an ARC collaborative research project between UnitingCare Burnside and researchers from the Social Justice and Social Change Research Centre of the University of Western Sydney. The overall aim of the total project, which commenced late 2000, was ‘to develop a holistic model of out-of-home care to meet the needs of individual children and young people through the participation of children and young people and other adult groups in the research and thereby decision-making about out-of-home care’. In this paper I briefly outline the methodological approach, some of the issues we confronted and strategies we used in employing a participative methodology designed to facilitate children’s involvement as active participants.
