Abstract
Researchers often elect to undertake a review of the literature as an initial step in their research project, or as a self-contained project. A well-conducted systematic review sits comfortably at the top of the 'hierarchy of evidence', and thus it can be easy for a researcher to feel drawn towards that review methodology as the 'gold standard' to aim for. This, of course, is true if the purpose of the review matches what a systematic review can offer. However, there are many purposes for which an alternative review method may be more appropriate.
