Abstract

This experimental study is concerning with the scouring at the outlet of a box culverts. The blockage of culverts has considered as an important factor on the scouring pattern at the outlet of the box culverts. To investigate the effect of blockage on scouring pattern at the downstream of box culvert, some experimental tests were carried out in a laboratory flume located in the Hydraulic Laboratory of University of Technology Sydney (UTS). The experimental tests were carried on in both blocked and non-blocked conditions and consequentially the effect of blockage on depth of scour hole is investigated. It was found that for flow with Froude number of 0.09 there is a 15% increase in the depth of scour hole for a box culvert with 40 precent blockage. Furthermore, the scour depth in blocked condition with the Froude number of 0.12 was 22% deeper than box culvert with non-blocked condition.
