Abstract

![CDATA[Shear connectors are an essential component to bring steel and concrete together to form a composite section. There are three major types of shear connectors either being welded, screwed and bolted. For bolted shear connectors, it has been used widely as a form of demountable connectors. The demountable connectors allow either or both the concrete or steel section to be removed or replaced easily in application as as bridge structures when top slab can be replaced due to weather damage. However, the largest diameter of shear connectors allowed in the Australian Standards AS2327.1 is only 24 mm. In order to allow for larger diameter to be used in practice, this paper has investigated using the push-out tests to determine the shear capacity of M24, M30 and M36 bolts with 30 and 40 MPa concrete. Eight push-out test specimens have been tested to failure and load-slip relationship has been recorded. The failure of the M24 test specimens is shear connector failure whilst the all M30 and M36 test specimens experience concrete failure. M24 test specimens have achieved expected shear capacities according to the Australian Standards AS2327.1. Other test specimens have lower experimental than calculated shear capacities.]]
