Supply, demand and status : an assessment of higher education reform on early childhood education

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperConference Paperpeer-review

Abstract

Reform of higher education policy in Australia is predicated on an estimated shortage of degree-qualified people to satisfy labour market. Using early childhood education as a case study, the paper assesses the likely future supply and demand of early childhood educators by seeking to answer two questions: (1) will there be a sufficient 'supply' of students willing to pursue undergraduate studies for awarding of an early childhood education degree?; and (2) will there be labour market demand (i.e. employment opportunities) for the increase in degree-holding staff? The paper also discusses the reason occupational status influences the future supply of, and demands for, early childhood educators.
