Supply-side theories of monopoly capital : a critical appraisal of "sector analysis"

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperConference Paperpeer-review

Abstract

This paper examines what Frankel (1987) calls the "Sector Analysis" with in order to elucidate certain problems with the Weberian conception of crises. Sector Analysis was essentially an attempt to theorise social democratic supply-side economic policies using Weber's concept of modernity. The argument is confined to examining the consistency of both the theory and its methodological basis. The first section outlines the theoretical antecedent of Sector Analysis. This is Weber's and Luhmann's theory of market economy and bureaucracy as a development of instrumental rationality. The second section examines Habermas's, Offe's and O'Connor's (Sector Analytical) appropriation of this theory. The third section, concluding section suggests that critical weaknesses in Weber's method present significant problems for sector analysis.
