    Abstract

![CDATA[A longitudinal management case study of the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Technologies (CRC-IMST) is presented. More than sixty CRC’s are currently active in six different application areas, and they all have some similarities and some differences in the way they operate. The CRC-IMST operated with a small administration core team strategically managing a portfolio of industry-driven, relatively short-term projects. This practice was very effective in delivering value to SME industry participants via access as required to relevant expertise in a five-member research network. In this paper, the CRC-IMST operations are characterised using a virtual enterprise framework to help compare it with two other CRC’s. Some observations regarding the absorptive capacity of SME industry partners are briefly discussed.]]
