    Abstract

The text for Susannine starts with a verse from Luther's Christmas carol, 'Von Himmel Hoch,' which he wrote for his children, and which speaks of the heart being a dwelling or house for the Christ child. Two other texts, written for different purposes by two compatriots of Luther, bring out some of the tenderness, mystery and awe implicit in this direct and childlike image. These are verses from Rückert's 'Du bist die Ruh,' in which the melody from 'Von Himmel Hoch' appears in the inner parts, and 'Princess Sabbath,' by Heine. Lyrics in German, with lyrics as text in German with English translation. Instrumentation: Unaccompanied choir (SSAATTBB). Duration: 4 min.
