Abstract

The need for sustainable development has resulted in implementation of various strategies at the local scale. While some of these strategies have resulted in desired outcomes, others have not achieved their stated objectives. This paper examines projects in different countries that have focused on meeting the needs of water, food material and energy demand. The focus is on projects that have made sustainable development as a central theme. Projects involving water supply systems, water and waste treatment systems, alternative energy generation and distribution systems have been analysed in the context of the framework of the model presented in the companion paper. The paper concentrates on projects that make use of upcoming and new technologies in these areas. The principal aim is to determine the impact on community well being. Arguments are presented for and against implementation of these technologies. Questions are then posed on whether a sustainable community is viable.
