Abstract
Although the word 'pony' often evokes images of children riding Shetland ponies, most pony racing was contested by fully grown thoroughbreds. Other myths about pony racing are that the sport was a rough-and-ready, corrupt form of weekday racing, featuring midget horses on miniature racecourses, and that it appealed only to desperate, 'needy and greedy' elements of the working class.
