Abstract
![CDATA[Taboo refers to the explicit prohibition of an act (as well as the discussion of such acts or related words) on the grounds that it is deemed either too sacred or too dangerous and spiritually polluting. Once considered a characteristic of premodern, the so-called primitive, cultural systems, taboo is now widely used in everyday popular and academic discourses to describe that which is understood to be unacceptable for cultural reasons as opposed to that which is made illegal by law in any society. Given its cross-cultural ubiquity, it has become a key concept in the social sciences and religious studies.]]
