Abstract

Inactivity is a key health equity issue. In Western Sydney, physical inactivity is driving high rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, costing the region $1.5 billion annually. These health challenges are most pronounced in socioeconomically marginalised areas, where barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, cost of living pressures, cultural and linguistic challenges, and heat vulnerability limit access to physical activity. This report calls for a systems approach to address these barriers, advocating coordinated, place-based strategies to promote active lifestyles and equitable access to recreational facilities. Key recommendations include prioritising preventive health, investing in marginalised areas, addressing community-specific needs, and fostering local leadership to transform Western Sydney into a more active and more healthy region.
