Abstract
Appears in the music CD Australia East and West: New Music for Viola and Piano by Australian Composers. Tarantula Variations began life as music for a play, Tarantula, written by Alana Valentine, directed by Nastassja Djalog and starring Zoe Carides for King Street Theatre in 2012. The play concerned the life of Lola Montez, born Eliza Gilbert in Ireland, infamous for the erotic spider dance she performed in Europe, the United States and even the goldfields of Australia in the mid-19th century. The score for the play was a set of miniatures for solo cello (performed live in the production by Richard Mills). The “variations” have removed some of the dance elements of that original iteration. What I think remains is some vestiges of spidery movement and a sense of pointillistic texture despite the slow, almost non-existent tempi. Some sense of Romanticism also remains, despite the somewhat austere setting.
