Teachers crossing borders

    Abstract

This chapter, which largely draws on observations from the refugee education projects we have participated in over the past five years, discusses the challenges classroom teachers encounter as they work with refugee students. The stories and arguments presented here show how teachers have responded to these challenges, what strategies they have devised, and how they have 'crossed borders' in terms of their understandings and professional practices, becoming 'different kinds of teachers' as a result. Based on local and international research, a broader overview of teachers' work and of current refugee education policies and practices is also provided.
