Abstract
This chapter focuses on a theory-practice orientation to classroom work in two Year Two (14-year-old students) language arts classrooms in an Integrated Programme school. The authors argue that adolescents' interaction with texts has expanded and their text experience has encompassed multiple modes of representation and communication. These call for a shared language to describe these multimodal texts. The authors describe their framework for developing a shared language to read multimodal texts and illustrate how this framework serves as "reading tools" for both teachers and students in their literacy practices in the school.
