    Abstract

![CDATA[This paper locates previous research into the role of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) head teachers within the context of the views of significant others by examining college director perceptions of the head teacher role. The research found that college directors were well aware of the changing role of the head teachers but revealed that they often felt powerless in influencing the working lives of the head teachers. Rather, they felt that TAFE was operating in an increasingly ‘centralised decentralised’ system where the opportunity to practice transformational leadership was overshadowed by the pressure to produce new efficiencies.]]
