Abstract
Currently, wastewater treatment is a key issue in modern society and is receiving great attention across the world. Nonetheless, conventional wastewater treatment systems have been inefficient in removing emerging contaminants and have several limitations. Thus, the improvement of biotechnological operations alternatives to these processes becomes essential. Within this context, microalgae are considered potential bioremediation. This chapter aims to provide an overview of emerging contaminants, conventional treatment processes for emerging contaminants removal, with special emphasis on the application of microalgae in bioremediation and regulatory aspects.
