    Abstract

    This chapter discusses benefits and pitfalls of technological and communication devices in outdoor activities and programs. Technological advancement is moving rapidly and includes gear such as clothing, footwear or outdoor activity equipment and mobile devices such as Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), satellite phones, mobile phones, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), laptops, notebooks, tablets and smart phones. Look down a trip gear list or a pre-departure checklist and you will see a myriad of technology.
