Abstract
An attention to language is at the heart of hermeneutic theory. Indeed, it seems fair to say that you think language is the first and defining task of hermeneutics. This concern with language circumscribes the hermeneutic conception of experience and it forms the core of hermeneutic theory. At the outset of the remarks the author comments that hermeneutic theory is driven by the conviction that language articulates the world and us in such elemental ways that one can ultimately say “Being that can be understood is language”. Hermeneutics does not end with its efforts to think the nature of language, but it does begin with these efforts.
