Abstract

The political and sporting contexts are important to understand why Australia invests and bids for international sport events. In the following chapter, the coined phrase a "Decade of Green and Gold" is examined to outline the context of Australia's aggressive pursuit to host a number of prominent events in the coming years, notably the 2023 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Women's World Cup, 2026 Victoria Commonwealth Games, and the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. This chapter focuses on football and discusses how through national policies, press releases, and the tournament materials, it becomes clear that there is a pursuit to make the Matildas an international sporting brand for women and an extensive plan to capitalise on hosting the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup through the Legacy 23 plan and aims. This chapter is a good starting point for understanding the context surrounding football, the FIFA Women's World Cup, and Australia's ambitions to host multiple international sport events.
