The barnacle : a bit like camping, but much, much better

The Barnacle is a compact extension to an existing residence, programmed to provide space for sleeping, bathing, writing, and sitting in the winter sun. The project is designed to deliver a maximum of experience within limiting constraints. Woking the sensation of camping, or berthing in the belly of a yacht, the project requires active participation by the occupant to open, close, and adjust built-in elements to control light, privacy, storage, and ventilation. A built-in bed with concealed lighting hovers in the center of the space, around which a hoop-pine wrapper of storage, desk space, and framed views are orchestrated. The palette of materials includes copper cladding, glass, hoop pine plywood, and Australian cypress. The result is a small extension to an existing holiday house that creates an additional private sleeping and living space for guests.
