    Abstract

![CDATA[Whilst there is some momentum behind the utilisation of open innovation strategies, and behind innovation in support of environmental sustainability, anecdotal evidence suggests there is limited research related to the combination of the two. The paper begins to explore the use of open innovation / open source ideas in a broad sustainability context, as some researchers suggest a need to not only change what we do, but how we do things. Two case studies are presented and discussed in terms of some open innovation attributes suggested from the literature. Only some of the things that drive open innovation in a business context seem to apply, but viewing the cases in this way drew out some ideas for improved practice.]]
