Abstract

Despite few clinical efficacy data, mobile mental health technologies are proliferating rapidly. A recent study of health-care applications (apps) showed that more than 165 000 are directly available to patients and that the health conditions with the most apps are those related to mental health. Although some studies have begun to explore the potential mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of mental health apps, the potential consequences of the placebo effect have so far been overlooked.
