Abstract
This commentary is concerned with the appointment of seventeen senior government officials in Hong Kong (HK), in May 2008. When it became known that some of them possessed foreign nationalities, in addition to their Chinese citizenships, there were calls for them to renounce their overseas identities. Some appointees complied, but some did not. The writer submits that the event was an attack on the HK Government by local legislators to flex their political muscles. It was not motivated by legal considerations.
