The dynamics of diversity in Sydney's Indians

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

This paper examines how Fiji Indians are creating a home away from home in multicultural Sydney. It begins by presenting the Fijian Indians' history as a twice displaced community - first from India as indentured labourers and from Fiji under a condition of crisis after the 1987 and 2000 coups. Issues of assimilation, diversity and difference in relation to the media and its consumption are discussed. The Indians' social space and their relationship with their counterparts from India are explored to understand the dynamics of diversity in a community with similar history and background.
