    Abstract

![CDATA[Shepard tones are computer-generated complex tones in which the specifying variable of pitch (i.e., F0) is attenuated and the nonspecifying variable of pitch (i.e., pitch chroma) is accentuated. Thus pitch perception in Shepard tones is determined by the circular dimension of chroma. The aim of this study was to alter perception of Shepard tones using categorization training, which increases participants’ sensitivity to the category-relevant dimension. In Experiment 1, the category-relevant dimension was the F0 contour; and in Experiment 2 it was the frequency change of the loudest partials. The hypotheses about how training would modify pitch contour judgments were supported in Experiment 1; however, they were not supported in Experiment 2.]]
