Abstract
I want to begin by mapping out three of the most common ways in which violence done in the name of religion is explained. I'm going to label these: 1. the ideological explanation; 2. the political explanation; and 3. the individualist explanation. Each of these represents a quite different approach to the question "What is it we are witnessing here?" when we encounter something we think of as religious violence.
