The ethical foundations of youth work as an international profession

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

This Handbook, as far as I know, is the first book about youth work practice that is truly international. That is hugely significant, and not before time. A common understanding about youth work as a profession has often developed at a national level, but, usually, that is as far as it has gone, and there are often divergences even at a national level: for example between church-based youth work, uniformed organisations such as the Scouts, and funded, full-time practitioners. Not that there has necessarily been any conflict between youth workers in one country and another: it is more that nobody has really done the work of looking and translating between the different traditions that have emerged across the globe.
