Abstract

The Heart Research Institute was officially opened on the 17th March, 1989 for the purpose of researching the mechanisms of athlerosclerosis (hardening and consequent blockage of the arteries of the heart) using biochemical, cell biological and molecular biological approaches. An animal supply unit producing quality laboratory animals (although conventionally housed) for use in such experimentation is clearly essential in this type of institute. It was decided to structurally modify the small rooms designated for animal housing use to a conventional animal house employing high standards of hygiene and husbandry. This paper aims to describe both the structural modifications and the routine operations of such a unit.
