Abstract

In Australia in 2007 the Labor party won the election and Kevin Rudd was sworn in as Prime Minister on December 3. One of the Rudd government’s first acts was delivering an apology to indigenous Australians for the Stolen Generations. Following this national apology, and as part of the Council of Australian Government’s Closing the Gap strategy, $26.6 million was provided in the 2009–10 budget to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation to address the harmful legacy of colonization, and in particular the history of removing children from their families that continues to impact on today’s generation. On October 30, 2009, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation was established, “An Independent national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation with a focus on healing our community.” It was their funding that supported Gunawirra and allowed it to carry out the Trauma Project described here.
