The forbidden girls : (homo)sexuality, poverty and race in Brazillian soccer fields

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperConference Paper

Abstract

In Brazil, soccer is more than a game" it's a "Brazilian way of life", a manifestation that transcends the sport, marking the identity of the country. Such importance fortifies what "everybody" knows: in Brazil, soccer is a male-dominated sport, a field in which women suffered in the past and still suffer to enter. The objective of this study was to analyze the experiences of Brazilian female soccer players, focusing on the conditions under which they play. This paper is based on a large ethnographic study undertaken during the Female Paulista Championship in 2004; right after the female Brazilian squad had won a silver medal during the Olympic Games.
