Abstract
Tourism is known for its transformative capacities. As an activity with an unremitting global reach and an important role in shaping the many desires and experiences of novelty and difference, the tourist has become a 21st-century metaphor for contemporary ways of being in the world (Bauman, 1996). In creating and recreating toured versions of the world that fashion and sustain tourist demand, the tourism industry relentlessly gestures towards the future.
