Abstract
This paper will use a close literary analysis of Christos Tsiolkas' 2005 novel, Dead Europe, to argue that studies in nationalism have tended to simplify the role of cultural artefacts such as literature and to co-opt them into the ideology of nationalism without paying attention to the critiques of the society which the writers themselves present.
