Abstract

he Gully is a single release by Black Box White Cube (Dr Greg Hughes) that offers a new audio-focused immersive experience of 'The Gully', Garguree (Gundungurra Country, Katoomba). The piece embodies the array of site visits and community engagement events that underpinned its production as a continuation of work made for The Painted River Project. An innovation in the fields of creative production and design is an integrative approach to Planetary Health for transitions to the Symbiocene. The revocation of environmental/ ecological grief via human-centred design is being rethought for a novel planet-centred mode of design thinking. Engagement with fragile sites and systems via placemaking at a community level is an important outcome of such research. The track is a unique offshoot of previous The Ecotone and Ten Years In The Ground works and employs methods of media art, field recording, sound design, music composition and audio production to offer an expression of place, indigenous knowledge and science communications to promote engagement and contemplation of place and culture integration.
