Abstract
The inclusion and representation of young people in the news is an important social justice issue because news media influence public priorities and discourses. In this chapter, we discuss findings from a series of studies that examined young Australians’ inclusion and participation in news media. Our analysis shows that young people are not represented in a fair and equitable way in the Australian news media. At the same time, they receive very little news literacy education at school. We argue that, as news business models continue to evolve due to digital disruption, there is a unique opportunity to re-think the absence and the misrepresentation of young people in news media, as part of school-based media literacy efforts.
