    Abstract

Installation of rainwater tanks have become common for both infill and re-development housing projects in NSW as a requirement of the NSW Building and Sustainability Index (BASIX). These rainwater tanks have an inherent impact on the quality and quantity of stormwater discharges from a development. This paper discusses the impacts of the rainwater tanks on stormwater discharges at a lot scale development. Throughout June 2008, two rainwater tanks in Western Sydney were monitored on a continuous and grab sample basis as part of a pilot study. The data collected were utilised in the calibration and validation of a lot scale model using XP-SWMM. The tank overflow water quantity characteristics of the sampling and modelling indicate a significant reduction in both the volume and peak of the stormwater discharge from the roof catchment fitted with the rainwater tank. The study shows that a lot scale stormwater modelling can be conducted successfully as a continuous simulation using the XP-SWMM software program.
