Abstract
Refugees flee political violence and seek asylum in Australia, however are met with closed borders and are sent to Pacific Islands. Three performers have come together to tell a dark fairy tale of Manus, intertwined with poetry, somatic movement and storytelling. The Island reflects on the shadows of colonisation and complexities of mourning, grief and loss. Sheridan is not wanting to perpetuate the silence or to reinforce the violence of appropriation; Samara embodies the suffering of her bloodline and reaches out for hope; Joanna abhors the culture of secrecy and inhumanity around re-traumatisation, dislocation and violence that refugees are subjected to in our name.
