Abstract

Ear Drops are new short form mediated listening experiences, by Australian artists, designed to 'unblock' ears blocked up by decades of predictable listening habits. They are sound rich audio drops for the ear that range from spoken narrative driven works to way out explorative sound art and radio art works. Ear Drops are intended to treat the ear drum and stimulate brain plasticity! Some Ear Drops will make it to radio broadcast for public inoculation, while others presented here are for the curious and for those showing signs of mainstream media fatigue to self administer, with caution. If the work is too challenging to listen to for one minute, as John Cage has suggested try it for two. If still challenging, then four, then eight, sixteen, thirty-two minutes. Eventually, as Cage suggests, one discovers that it is not challenging at all, but becomes an acquired sonic treat that unblocks your ears to engage with an increasingly diverse sonic landscape. At this point you will know that the Ear Drop treatment has taken effect. Side effects may include: open mindedness, increased sense of creativity, diversity of ideas, spontaneous brain storming episodes, day dreaming, increased risk taking, feeling of alienation from usual peer group, inability or reluctance to tune back into mainstream media.
